For O‘ahu actress, entrepreneur and guru Samantha Lockwood, practice makes perfect.
Some like it hot—Samantha Lockwood for starters. A perfectionist for the pose, she founded the newly opened Hot Yoga College of India in Honolulu after learning the rigorous discipline from Bikram Choudhury himself. She first got certified as an instructor while still in high school, then trained during a three-year teaching stint at a studio on Kaua‘i. Now Samantha is bringing the heat to O‘ahu. She is also the mind behind Fleurings, a line of unique vase jewelry with a celebrity following; and an actress with major DNA—her father is iconic sci-fi actor Gary Lockwood of 2001: A Space Odyssey fame. She’s had roles in shows such as CSI: NY and Hawaii Five-O. “I love thinking about characters, the human condition,” says Samantha. “Acting is like yoga for me; it is a study of the self, only through the eyes of a different character. Either way, you must ask what is motivating this person, who is this person, this character.” When reflecting on island life, the California native is totally at home. The “Hawai‘i vibe suits me perfectly,” she says. “We have warm weather; nice beaches; clean air; and kind, down-to-earth people who understand the value in community. So, for me, Hawai‘i life is the best.”
