Globe-trotting wellness influencer Candice Kumai is an expert in the art of fusing personal style with self-care. A former model, Kumai has evolved into a multihyphenate: a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef, TV host, and five-time best-selling author who frequently travels to the islands in search of inspiration. Her most recent visit was to promote her latest book, Kintsugi Wellness: The Japanese Art of Nourishing Mind, Body and Spirit ($30, Harper Wave). We chatted with her about her low-key style and beauty routine, and her everyday must-haves.
How would you describe your personal style? Chillest girl ever. For everyday, it’s MICHI athleisure, Tavi Noir Barre socks and my Nike high-tops. I get dressed up for hot work events and hot dates!
What’s your style secret weapon? A black bodysuit and high-waisted denim from Madewell
The best style advice I ever received was... Elizabeth Taylor once said, ‘Pour yourself a drink; put on some lipstick; and pull yourself together.’
What are your favorite fashion labels? Milly and Joie. ... My local favorites are Acacia Swim, ALOHA Collection bags and RVCA.
Where are your favorite places to shop in Hawai‘i? Rocky Point Collective and any place that sells mac nuts
What’s your ultimate fashion splurge? I’d rather donate to charity... but, every once in a while, a nice pair of shoes.
I never leave the house without... my Eir NYC sunblock on and a matcha latte in my hand.
As a wellness expert, what is your beauty philosophy? Keep it clean! I use Indie Lee skincare products, Juice Beauty CC cream, Flesh Beauty bronzer, Hourglass highlighter and vegan eye shadow from Aether Beauty. And any of the nontoxic products at Credo!
What’s your off-duty beauty routine? When I’m off-duty, I’ll take a trip to an onset or take a bath with Herbivore bath salts or Naturopathica products.
