Kailua-born Tungi Ormond has been drawing or painting most of her life. “Being creative is my preferred state of mind,” she says. Her lush depictions of island life feature local ladies lounging around the beach, hanging ten off a surfb oard or wandering the pineapple fields in rich colors of saffron, paprika and sea green. Her work is reminiscent of vintage travel posters and harkens back to a simpler time in Hawai‘i. While these finished paintings are done in oil, her creative process also includes sketching in gouache and watercolor, particularly when painting outdoors en plein air. Growing up in the picturesque surroundings of Hawai‘i is what most inspires the artist. “I feel a strong sense of gratitude at having been raised in such a beautiful place, so it’s not hard for me to find inspiration in my surroundings,” says Ormond. “I try to portray a kind of relationship with the land in my work, a loving, peaceful feeling.” Her eye-catching pieces can be found at Aloha Home Market in Kailua or online (salteehawaii.com) and make the perfect addition to any island abode.
