Once seen as a children’s craft, now seen as an awe-inspiring art form, origami’s modern advances are being put on display at the Schaefer International Gallery (Sept. 2-Nov. 25). Master folders Erik and Martin Demaine, Vincent Floderer and Yuko Nishimura are among the nine international artists creating bold and elaborate pieces with paper for the Above the Fold: New Expressions in Origami exhibit. Curated by Meher McArthur, the artwork displays the progression of contemporary origami from a small-scale arts-and-crafts activity into large-scale sculptures expressing social, political, aesthetic and cultural dialogues. Origami isn’t only making headlines in contemporary art, the craft has helped scientists and mathematicians discover certain mysteries of the universe. Father-son art team, Erik and Martin Demaine, are fusing the two worlds together by using calculations to create unconventional sculptures. While the exhibit is on the island, artist Dr. Robert J. Lang will host two workshops: “Introduction to Modular Origami Polyhedra,” which introduces modular origami and 3-D geometry, and “Brining Origami to Life: Artistic Folding Techniques.” This exclusive exhibit is not to be missed.
