The North Shore of Kaua‘i—and the Hawaiian Islands at large—has long attracted tourists to its verdant shores, but Common Ground Kaua‘i (commongroundkauai.com) has set out to change the way they experience the land and community of the island. The 65-acre farm-cum-dining experience nestled in the lush fields of Kilauea has a vision to build a more regenerative future for the island. The farm practices agroforestry, which uses trees to support agriculture on a single piece of land. This results in a more sustainable farming method that, over time, will require less work, in hopes that one day Hawai‘i won’t have to import 85% of its food. The organization aims to showcase the abundance of Kaua‘i by inviting guests on farm tours to join family-style farm-to-table dinners. “Our mission is to foster connection to place,” says Jennifer Luck, CEO of Common Ground. “We hope visitors will leave feeling more connected to our island, having experienced something transformative and fun and leaves them with a sense of reverence for Kaua‘i.” Locals also enjoy the farm’s monthly lei workshops, muumuu events, and jazz nights.
