“The client wanted this vacation home to be a place where friends and family could come and stay, relax and enjoy Hawai‘i,” says Shaolin Low, principal of Studio Shaolin. “She wanted to fit as many people as possible and have a lot of comfortable spaces throughout the home.”
“The new owner really wanted to feel the Hawai‘i vibe when she was in the home but wanted a modern take on it,” says Low, “which is how we came to a modern coastal blend and kept everything feeling light and bright, but adding in our signature neutral colors to help give the happy coastal vibe she wanted.”

A nod to her roots, the client, originally from Louisiana, wanted to incorporate artwork from New Orleans artist Heather Bird Harris into the home. “Once she showed the art to me, I had a vision of having five of her pieces running down the long hallway by the front door, flanked with a console on each side. The artist uses natural materials found in Louisiana in her paintings, so it was cool to incorporate that into the entry space,” says Low.
The main hangout space is the grand living room that radiates from the pink terrazzo fireplace installed by the previous owners. “I knew immediately that the fireplace needed a glam feeling,” she says. “While the rest of the home had this coastal vibe, there was something more formal about the space. We chose to have two low sofas flanking a green volcanic ash coffee table and finished the conversation circle with two woven chairs and ottomans. It was really fun to bring a subtle leopard print into the great room with the fireplace and just little details that make a house a home.” In the dining area, they choose a stunning custom oak dining table from Splinter Concept that fits at least eight people.

A beautiful, modern coastal space filled with cozy rooms, textures and an overall happy vibe. “The home is all about being cozy, relaxing and rejuvenating,” adds Low. “I think we achieved that feeling perfectly.”
