The Party
The setting sun cast a golden glow over The Modern Honolulu as hundreds of VIPs and island scenesters flooded the property for A Lucky Modern Buddha Belly, one of the hottest events of this year’s festival.

The People
Culinary luminaries drew in fans with a force that could only be described as magnetic. After all, in the islands, chefs enjoy a status usually accorded to the likes of celebs and sports stars. Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto exuded a screenworthy presence fit for his Iron Chef moniker, while pastry princess Michelle Karr-Ueoka of MW Restaurant had a line wrapped around the pool. In one of his first major appearances since leaving ultraluxe Vintage Cave, wunderkind Chris Kajioka held court in the Sun Room.

The Highlights
With the crowd topping a headcount of 1,000, the evening was a buzzing whirlwind of energy. The array of gourmet offerings impressed, of course. After all, who wouldn’t have been taken by New York chef Tony Ginou’s savory-sweet mix of shaved foie gras and tropical fruits? And when it came to drinks, mix masters like island talent Chandra Lam Lucariello and Ivy Mix of New York’s Clover Club shook up equally sophisticated libations. -Photos by Tracy Chan
