The Party
Shining brighter than ever, the 15th anniversary of the islands’ most starry-eyed film festival kicked off in resplendent style with a fete at the ever-popular Capische in Wailea.
The People
Maui’s culturati, including festival organizer Barry Rivers, reveled with bona fide box-office draws and film-fest honorees Emma Roberts, Evan Rachel Wood, Joe Manganiello, Lupita Nyong’o and Shep Gordon, the legendary Hollywood agent and star of the documentary Supermensch. Also spotted in Wailea was actor James Marsden.
The Highlights
Beautiful harmony by guitarist and Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winner Benny Uyetake swept along the winding garden. A first-time attendee, Wood was enamored by the atmosphere. “It’s kind of breathtaking,” she said. “I’ve heard nothing but good things, and everyone told me I had to go.” The Valley Isle’s easygoing vibe also impressed her. “It’s very laid-back, and it’s a nice change of pace to a normal festival,” added the starlet. Adding to the fete were Capische’s top toques. Executive Chef Brian Etheredge headed the crudo station, and chef Chris Kulis took center stage at Il Teatro. Guests considered it an applauseworthy performance. –Photos by Jason Moore and Jonathan Leibson
