High Art

| November 1, 2013 | Parties

THE PARTY With creative dynamo John Koga and Allison Wong at the helm of this one-of-a-kind, thought-provoking show on the representation of Hawai‘i, there was more than enough reason for well-heeled socialites, island academics and taste-minded professionals to make their way to the top of Chanel’s Waikīkī flagship store. THE PLAYERS Paul Pfeiffer, Kristen Chan, Garnet Puett, Tiana Torii, Peter Shaindlin, Ashley Bickerton, Tia Gaurani
THE HIGHLIGHTS Artistry flowed throughout the gallery as freely as the generous amounts of Champagne. While many of the artists’ works fueled conversations, it was Lawrence Seward’s installation, called Paper Lei, a larger-than- life garland resembling the craft leis made by grade-school students, that attracted the most onlookers. The buzz of people snapping pictures through and around the oversized lei almost became a piece of performance art in itself. Now, what would the art critics say about that?
