Kristin Wood has had a lifelong love affair with beauty. A classically trained dancer, Wood decided at the early age of 18 to devote her career to the art of making women look their best. She started by working in some of O`ahu’s top salons. In 2007, she opened her first full-service semipermanent lash service salon, taking a chance on the emerging trend—now Wood has two salons and also services customers at the Four Seasons Resort O`ahu at Ko Olina. Experiencing her lash application gives you insight into how meticulous and detail-oriented Wood is. Her work is remarkably stunning and transformative.
How did you know you were meant to have a career in beauty?
My love for the beauty industry began at the age of 16 when I became a NARS cosmetics representative. I was their youngest salesperson. Through dance (i.e., Drill Team Hawaii), I was offered a full scholarship to Hawai`i Pacific University. I studied entrepreneurial studies, but I knew deep down inside what my calling was. I was offered a unique opportunity to take a private class on permanent cosmetics, and that’s where it began. I rented a room at Hanalei Salon and Boutique, and opened [my business] Permanent Cosmetic Enhancing by Kristin at the age of 18. ... I continued to grow my business and add additional beauty offerings to my menu.
What has been the best reaction a client has had to receiving your service?
They’ll say, ‘I feel confident’; ‘My lash extensions feel comfortable’; ‘I feel beautiful’; and also when an eye doctor refers their patients to us. For me, the biggest compliment is when our guests believe and trust us [enough] to refer someone. Our ultimate goal is to add value to our guests’ lives—one lash at a time.
What makes you so passionate?
I believe in the art of getting ready. And I want to make it easier for busy women and those with careers. When I was younger, I remember that my grandmother never washed her own hair. She always went to the salon to get it done, and I think there’s something about a woman and the care she takes to get herself ready. It’s important for every woman to take time for herself to look and feel good.
