THE PARTY
While style-seekers lamented the closing of Aussie expat Deb Mascia’s Mu‘umu‘u Heaven in Kailua earlier this year, the lamentations were short-lived when she announced that her coveted brand would be back with a chic pop-up at retail mecca T Galleria by DFS. And what better way to celebrate this local label’s arrival on Kalākaua Avenue than with an island-style bash?
THE PEOPLE
The who’s who of Honolulu made their way into the fete, where they were welcomed with fresh lei and mai tais. To create the perfect ambience, Nā Hōkū Hanohano-winning slack-key guitarist Kawika Kahiapo worked his magic. But the real surprise of the evening was a special appearance by recording artist and North Shore-resident Jack Johnson.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
The spirit of Windward O‘ahu was definitely alive and well. Of course, a canoe filled with Kona Longboard Lager didn’t hurt. Nor did the fresh coconuts cut open on the spot. (In a perfect eco-friendly touch, all of the coconuts were planted afterward.) Of course, the action took place with the gorgeously constructed pop-up hut—a truly green installation made with finds sourced from Reuse Hawai‘i. Beneath its chandelier, guests scooped Mascia’s frocks and limited-edition aloha shirts. -Photos by Travis Okimoto
