Chinese-born pianist Zhang “Zee Zee” Zuo takes on Beethoven with the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra.

With her musical career in a crescendo, piano phenom Zhang Zuo—otherwise known as “Zee Zee”—joins Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra for a real classic March 19. The engagement marks something of an encore for the China native, who, having visited Honolulu at age 11, remembers it as “one of the most beautiful places in the world.” Lauded for her full-of-life performances, the child prodigy-turned-rising star has played with top ensembles like the London Philharmonic and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and recently wrapped a two-year residency with BBC’s flagship New Generation Artists program. Now, with maestro Jun Märkl conducting, Zee Zee and HSO prepare for Masterworks 9: Beethoven & Schumann. “To me, Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 is one of the most special pieces of music,” she shares. “It’s playful, charming, energetic and its meaning has become more profound now that I see it through the prism of my artistic and personal experiences.” We’re all ears. 4pm, premium orchestra seat $92, Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall, 777 Ward Ave., Kaka‘ako, O‘ahu, 946.8742
