As my family and I enter the renovated Restaurant Suntory located on the third level of Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikīkī, we are greeted with aloha and the aroma of our favorite Japanese cuisine. Following a massive $2 million transformation, Restaurant Suntory reopened last year. “The renovation offers the highest level of cuisine and the best sushi in America served with omotenashi (Japanese hospitality),” says Restaurant Suntory’s general manager, Nobuyuki Aoyama. “Ultimately, we aim to become the No. 1 Japanese restaurant in Honolulu.” The restaurant offers multiple Japanese dining experiences, such as teppanyaki (cooking in front of diners on a flat iron grill), kaiseki (traditional multicourse meals emphasizing seasonal ingredients), nabe (shabu shabu or sukiyaki-style hot pot) and other types of washoku (Japanese cuisine mainstays like tempura, grilled fish, soba and udon noodles, and more). The Tokiwa sushi counter in particular has been completely reborn offering an exclusive, luxury omakase-style experience hidden away within the venue for 12 lucky guests. We delight in the sizzling teppan room to enjoy a front-row view of our chef masterfully preparing our meals. With my teenage picky eater and my 7-year-old with an eager palate in tow, we each left with a five-star rating, thanking Restaurant Suntory for meeting its lofty goal of being the best. “Hawai‘i is a special place,” says Aoyama, “and it is a tremendous honor to share our cuisine and our traditions with local residents and visitors from around the world.” suntory.com
