As a consolation prize, in case you can’t make it to the Kentucky Derby this year, treat yourself to Buffalo Trace Distillery’s new release—a 20-year-old beauty called Double Eagle Very Rare ($2,000).
Over-the-top packaging alone makes this pour an indulgent pleasure. Each bottle features two handblown crystal eagles: one as the stopper and one forever trapped inside the bottle. Beyond that, opening the doors of the presentation box causes the birds to be illuminated by miniature spotlights. “We’ve been waiting for this whiskey to mature for years,” says Kris Comstock of Eagle Rare’s marketing team. “Even after two decades, these barrels are surprisingly balanced. Hints of vanilla, toasted oak and caramel lead to a gracefully aged oaky flavor.” Don’t hold your horses: Only 299 bottles of this treasure were produced.
