We caught up with Maui’s short-boarder to see how she spends her time on and off the board. At the age of 22, short-boarder Summer Macedo has been surfing competitively for over a decade. She won the ISA World Junior Championship gold medal at 16 and now competes in the WSL’s Qualifying Series.
How has growing up in Lahaina, Maui, influenced your idea of wellness?
Living in Hawai‘i, my life is centered around the ocean. It creates balance and has taught me so much respect for Mother Nature.
How do you take care of your health while training?
I’m a huge advocate for self-care! I love taking care of my body inside and out. My body takes a beating when I’m training and surfing, so recovery is key. My wellness routine includes maintaining good nutrition, listening to podcasts, doing physiotherapy and getting facials. Anything that keeps me happy, healthy and feeling great!
Who has been a key influence in your sports journey?
Hannah Huesman, my sports psychologist, is someone I credit with truly changing the direction of my life. She helped me build a strong foundation for my mental health.
When you’re not hitting the waves, what can we catch you doing?
I love creating music! I sing, write songs, and play the ukulele and guitar. When I’m home, I play live music with a guitarist at many different local restaurants.
Let’s talk fashion! What is your style inspiration?
My personal style is street style meets Hawai‘i surfer girl! I love fashion. I can walk into a store with jean shorts, a bikini and no shoes, or I can put together a more high-fashion outfit for when I go out with friends.
