Set within Hoakalei Resort in Ewa Beach, Wai Kai—a new surf-centric activity hub—is poised to be an active destination that inspires locals and visitors to connect to the water, land and rich Hawaiian culture.
“The vision for Hoakalei Resort has always been to create a vibrant waterfront resort community… a place where residents and guests will enjoy a variety of recreational spaces dedicated to leisure, wellness and Native Hawaiian culture,” says Larry Caster, director of retail development. “Wai Kai is an important component of this, providing a destination where residents and visitors will enjoy unique, interactive and engaging experiences, dining, events and more.”

Making a splash is the Wai Kai Wave, Hawai‘i’s first deep-water standing surf wave. Created in collaboration with O‘ahu’s Shane Beschen, he and other current and former professional surfers are available for hands-on instruction and training sessions at the Wave, which creates authentic surfing conditions with endless and adjustable waves ranging from 2 to 6 feet for all skill levels. The Wave overlooks the 52-acre Wai Kai Lagoon—Hawai‘i’s largest inland body of water—for water sports including stand-up paddling, kayaking, outrigg er canoeing, paddle boats and piloted electric boat cruises.
At the heart of the property, appetites are sated with a dual-concept restaurant presented by Michelin-awarded chef Todd Humphries of Kitchen Door Napa that includes full-service, signature restaurant Plaza Grill on the upper level with lanai seating and lagoon views, and counter-service restaurant Boardwalk Café on the ground level serving eclectic yet traditional favorites. Other eateries include The LookOut Food & Drink by the surf action, and Foam Coffee & Bar just off the boardwalk.
Stay tuned as Wai Kai is planning to bring the community together with entertainment including major surf and waterman competitions, and signature events and activities such as concerts, festivals, cultural events, craft fairs, a farmers market and more. waikai.com; atthelineup.com
