Sweet Success

| September 25, 2015 | Parties National

THE PARTY In one of the islands’ sweetest competitions, chocolatiers, chefs and aspiring students converged on The Fairmont Orchid, Hawai‘i for the fourth edition of the ever-popular Big Island Chocolate Festival. THE GUESTS Who better to judge the creations than top toques? Leading the judges were Stanton Ho; Guittard Chocolate Executive Pastry Chef Donald Wressell; Valrhona Chocolate’s Derek Poirier; and longtime island culinary personality Sam Choy, now behind Keauhou’s Kai Lanai restaurant. Spotted in the crowd during the fest was top kumu hula Nani Lim-Yap and chef Philippe Padovani. THE HIGHLIGHTS Understandably, competition was stiff, with The Fairmont Orchid scoring three awards, including the People’s Choice, while the Hilton Waikoloa took the prize for best savory dish. And when it came down to bonbons, the boys from O‘ahu’s Madre Chocolate fittingly came in first. But the real treat was that proceeds benefited the Kona Pacific Public Charter School and the Equip the Kitchens campaign for the future Hawai‘i Community College-Palamanui. –Photos by Kirk Lee Aeder
