The First Kahilu Gold Concert Of the Year

| April 17, 2017 | Parties

With a fiery sunset as his opening act, musician Makana kicked off this year’s Kahilu Gold Concert series in support of Kahilu Theatre’s arts education programs in Kamuela, on Hawai‘i Island.

THE PARTY Acclaimed slack key guitarist, singer and composer Makana gave attendees “chicken skin,” with his stunning, alfresco performance at a private estate in Kamuela. Titled Makana Gold, this was the first of two Kahilu Gold Concerts held this year in support of Arts Ed @ Kahilu—an umbrella of educational programs Kahilu Theatre manages for youth in the community, including Youth Shows, Kahilu Performing Arts Classes and Kahilu Partnerships. All help make the arts more accessible for the next generation. THE GUESTS Hosts Roy and Frances Simperman opened their luxurious home to culture supporters such as Kahilu Theatre board president Mimi Kerley and luxury real estate broker Beth Robinson. THE HIGHLIGHTS In addition to Makana’s spirited performance, there was a glorious sunset view, warm breezes drifting over the Mauna Lani golf course, and a sumptuous offering of pūpū and libations. The next day, Makana brought his sizzling showmanship to two performances at the Kahilu Theatre, where he wowed concertgoers. The arts continue to thrive! -Kathryn Drury Wagner
