In the charming seaside town of Hanalei on the North Shore of Kaua‘i, The Haven coffee shop (havenkauai.com) is determined to keep the authentic, local vibe that is quickly lost with an uptick of tourism.

Located in the tiny enclave of Wainiha next to the General Store, The Haven opened last year and soon became a local hangout and visitor favorite for a good cup of Joe. Owner Emmalani Lloyd grew up in Wainiha and wanted to create a place where her community could catch up that captured the essence of this corner of the island. “There’s a timeless sense of connection that will always be present on the North Shore,” she explains. “Impromptu coffee dates, long catchups in the aisles of our grocery stores, or school pick-up turning into a beach walk are all common occurrences.” The Haven hopes to foster these authentic connections over a coffee made with coffee beans from Hanalei Coffee Roasters and fresh pastries from local bakers served in a plantation-style storefront with warm, beachy vibes. Make like a regular and order from the secret menu for delights like Fruit Loops Matcha, Grandma’s House Chai, and Cowboy Cold Bru. “You have to come in and ask to find out what’s in it,” she says.
