The Hawai‘i International Polo Championships

| February 24, 2017 | Parties

The Waimānalo Polo Fields were the site of the most exciting match of the year, The Hawai‘i International Polo Championships.

THE PARTY
The elegant game of polo has been played the islands since 1880; few places in the world can claim such a deep history with the sport. Under Waimānalo’s moody skies, some of the world’s best polo players came together for the Hawai‘i International Polo Championships, a benefit match for the nonprofit Hawaii International Polo Association.

THE GUESTS
High-profile attendees included Brett MacNaughton, of real estate firm The MacNaughton Group; Richard Wacker, the president and CEO of American Savings Bank, and his wife, Ellen; and polo players Carlitos and Mariano Gracida, the sons of the late great polo legend Carlos Gracida.

THE HIGHLIGHTS
The day was filled with pulse-quickening excitement of all types, from the Red Bull daredevils who thrilled the crowd by BASE jumping from helicopters to JN Exotics’ showcase of exotic cars and a fashion show by Neiman Marcus. Sky Waikiki provided sensory delights with a DJ and expert mixologists, and local restaurants MW and Morimoto provided delicious cuisine. Of course, there were two non-negotiables—Champagne and stomping the divots—as both are essential polo traditions. -Kathryn Drury Wagner
