In-the-know beauty aficionados and design buffs have been talking about Tofu Skin Method (tofuskinmethod.com), a new skincare line designed by Honolulu-based makeup artist Lynn Yee. The line consists of three core products meant to make your skincare routine simple yet effective: balancing cleanser, a nonemulsifying cleanser that leaves skin clean but moisturized; restoring hydrosol that provides hydration from plants; and the nourishing oil elixir, a cold-pressed oil to lock in moisture. The line is gentle and meant for all skin types, and may seem deceptively simple, but that is precisely Yee’s motivation. “I’ve worked with a few tech startups, and this work experience outside of the beauty industry has given me a more diverse perspective on wellness and how skincare can realistically be incorporated into our daily lives.” Yee has been interested in beauty from a young age and started making her own skincare for herself years ago that would keep her sensitive, eczema-prone skin moisturized while serving as a good base under makeup. During the pandemic when she couldn’t take on makeup clients, she decided to formalize her routine, and so Tofu Skin Method was born. The sleek, modern packaging reflects the brand’s ethos with transparent bottles shaped like a tofu block that are symbolic of the transparency of the formulations. The gold accents are a nod to Yee’s Chinese heritage from her Popo (grandmother), who has served as an inspiration for the line from its inception. “I was lucky to watch my Popo care for her skin and follow her methods, so I always had a consistent skincare routine,” she says. “She showed me from a young age that skincare is a priority and a lifestyle—something consistent that we do every day and encompasses topical products, what we eat, what we wear and how we feel. It is a mindfulness for ourselves.”
