When global restauranteur and chef Vikram Garg opened his first solo venture, UMI by Vikram (umibyvikramgarg.com), in Waikīkī last year, it made a culinary splash. The picturesque restaurant, located in the Halepuna Waikīkī by Halekulani, is Garg’s independent flagship creation after reimagining restaurants around the world and at Hawai‘i’s own Halekulani, Park Lane Lounge Ala Moana, and TBD… The eatery may celebrate the ocean’s harvest with a seafood-centric menu for dinner, but the restaurant’s breakfast service is not to be missed. The diverse menu features local-with-a-twist dishes like Loco Moco and Umi Fried Rice and international favorites like Croque Madame and Shakshuka. Diners with a sophisticated palate will appreciate the decadent Osetra Caviar, served with eggs, parmesan cream, finger lime and buttered toast, but it is the Chariot du Pain starter—a selection of various breads served with cultured butter, seasonal preserves, milk jam and chocolate spread—that is the real crowd pleaser.
