Valentino Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli is having a moment—a major one. His key design element, joy, is so simple in context yet so rare in execution. Step into one of Valentino’s boutiques and browse the latest offerings, and it’s easy to discern how and why Piccioli is celebrated: He knows what neoteric, no-fuss femininity and glamour entail, as evidenced by his easy shapes and keen eye for color. For spring, this joy continues to reverberate with the introduction of the VRing bag, which echoes the juxtaposition of modernity and softness for which Piccioli has become known. The geometric-shaped shoulder bag is balanced by delicate leather layers that create an accordion-style base, tied together by two strips of supple material at the sides. The clasp—a large iconic V logo—is rendered in weighty brass and made overtly feminine with the addition an effortlessly knotted piece of signature Valentino red leather. Finally, the bag is finished with intelligently blocked contrasting hues only Piccioli could dream up.
